The Perfect Honeymoon: Destination Italy

Share

St. Marks BasilicaItaly is one of the most romantic countries in the world. Featuring Venice with its gondolas, the art and architecture of Florence, and Rome, the capital, in all its glory, Italy is sublime in its majesty. Many couples looking to connect with classic Renaissance opt to visit this historic country on their honeymoon.

One of the most visited countries in Europe, Italy boasts myriad B&Bs, charming hotels, comfortable apartments, farm guest houses, rustic villas, and luxury hotels. And most Mediterranean cruises port somewhere in Italy on both Eastern- and Western-Med cruises. All cruise lines consider these ports must stop locations and offer exciting excursions to all major sights.

In Venice--one of the worlds most beautiful cities--be sure to visit St Mark's Basilica, the Grand Canal, and the Piazza San Marco. Remember, though, it can get very overcrowded in Venice. So if you are honeymooning in high season and seek solitude, this may not be the place for you.

Florence is smaller and more intimate than Rome, and it has its own unique character that cannot be found in any other city in the world. The best romantic sunset in Florence can be enjoyed from the bridge, Ponte Santa Trinita. One of the best spots for a romantic stroll are the green Boboli gardens. These gardens were built by the Medici family in the 16th century and there are numerous pathways, fountains, and statues. Since the gardens rise above the city, they also provide great views of Florence.Trevi Fountain

In Rome, you can explore the Vatican Museum and Sistine chapel and marvel at Michelangelo's ceiling. Trevi Fountain is a breath-taking monument in the heart of Rome. Feel free to stroll the side streets and maybe even enjoy a cool gelato. If you go at dusk and then stay until night falls, you will be rewarded because the illumination makes it even more beautiful. This is truly a romantic spot. If you throw a coin in the fountain, legend has it you'll return to Rome. Or travel outside the city to visit the iconic symbol of Imperial Rome, the Coliseum.

I have clients marrying this June. They have planned to fly to Italy two days after their wedding, spend two nights in a four-star hotel and then embark from Civitavecchia (the port near Rome) the next day on a 12-night cruise. Then they'll stay in Tuscany five days in a friend's villa before flying back to Westchester.

If this sounds like heaven to you, this timeless country may just be the place for you two to unwind and bask in the afterglow if your nuptials.
