Alternative Guestbook Ideas
Most couples end up buying a guestbook to collect the names of guests who attended the wedding. This can be an easy way to keep track of the thank you letters to send. But what will you do with pages and pages of signatures after the wedding?
Unless staring at a list of names written in the standard white guestbook with embossed gold lettering is your idea of a good time...do something different.
Bored with the same old same old guestbooks? Try some alternative wedding guestbook ideas...
Have Them Sign Something That's NOT A Guestbook
Have a crafty side? Check out Do-It-Yourself-Weddings for some diy wedding guestbook alternatives.
Other items to have them sign include: a ceramic platter with special marker, engraving a silver dish, an apron, t-shirt, tapesty, wedding quilt or the mat around your engagement photo.
Words of Wisdom or Wedding Wishes
Have guests write their wedding wishes or words of advice on individual cards and put them in box, basket, vase or container of your choice.
You can add them into a guest scrapbook later on or simply pull them out and read them to celebrate your anniversary. (Take note: "wishes" get progressively naughty as the drinks start flowing; I recommend that you don't read them in mixed company. What's with the drunk theme in this blog post?)
Have a photo of you and your FI imprinted onto a puzzle and ask each of your guests to sign the back of a puzzle piece.
Ornaments
This is a perfect guestbook alternative for a winter wonderland wedding. Guests sign ornaments you provide and then you can hang them on your tree each year.
The Flip Video Guestbook
J
eff and I bought a Flip Mino video camera last year and we've been hooked ever since. For just over $200 you can shoot HD videos by pressing a single button. It's so easy anyone...even a drunk wedding guest...can handle it.
Here's how this guestbook alternative works. Buy or borrow a Flip Mino video camera for your wedding day. Ask your guests to pass it around and record their wedding wishes and words of advice. It's guaranteed to give you quirky, fun messages you'll laugh over for years to come.
Warning: be prepared for all sorts of video messages from misbehaving wedding guests. You also might want to assign someone the task of passing it around to prevent anything "inappropriate." Then again, that can be half the fun.
Guests LOVE taking photos in a photo booth, available for rent from a company like Saratoga Photobooth. The booth itself provides huge entertainment value...especially if you include a box of silly masks and hats for guests to pose in. Plus, you can have the attendant assist guests in gluing a photo into a scrap book for guests to sign on the spot.
Video Booth
If you want to make sure your staggering guests don't walk away your new video camera, consider renting a video booth.
Guests step inside and record a quick video message. The cost of rental $795 and includes a DVD of all the videos for you to keep.
Polaroid Guest Book
Prefer the old-fashioned route?
Ask your guests to take pictures of themselves with a polariod camera, glue it into a scrap book and sign it. All that's required is the camera, an empty scrap book and a glue stick.
Make sure you assign a responsible, sober guest with the task of taking everyone's picture. The cocktail hour is the perfect time to take the photos...and no one will be too blitzed.
My Favorite Easy & Fun Guestbook
I wish I was the type of girl with the time and creativity to put together my own scrap book. But that's never gonna happen.
In fact, my sole visit to a scrap booking party a few years back was a DISASTER. I cut my finger so badly I just avoided stitches and I came home swearing to Jeff, Never again.
If you want a guestbook that's a little outside the ordinary...without the extra work...check out the GuestBook Store. These guestbooks spur the imagination by asking your guests to draw pictures and relate their favorite memories. No diy wedding work required.
Whatever you decide to do as far as a guestbook, do what you want to do. I've seen plenty of couples skip a guestbook altogether. Find an alternative that's right for you and don't be afraid to get creative!
