How to Plan the Perfect Honeymoon: 5 Budget Honeymoon Ideas

Share

Money is one of the most important aspects for many couples when planning their honeymoon. Creativity and flexibility are the solutions to an economical honeymoon. If you must travel to Fiji—even off-season—the price tag usually will match that destination. Remember, you don't want to return from your honeymoon in debt. Your plans must be cost effective!All-Inclusive Resort

Here is a list of ideas that can save you money on your honeymoon...

1. All-inclusives

Often, you can save money at all-inclusive resorts, but check out what is included beforehand. Choose an all-inclusive that truly includes everything from all meals, water, alcohol, non-motorized sports and even some excursions. Most packages will include your food, beverages and some activities, but they vary widely.

Also, if you drink alcohol, find out how much is included. Some resorts limit the types of drinks they offer for free, so you may have a limited selection of beer, wine or cocktails.

If you are a foodie, you may be disappointed, since selections could be limited. Many all-inclusives are quite expensive, but there are some that are reasonable, especially some in Mexico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.

2. A loaner

You may know someone who has a time-share or a vacation home at the beach, a cabin by a lake, a condo in the mountains. If a family member owns that timeshare, let them know that you are having trouble affording a resort. They may offer you their timeshare as a wedding gift, which is easy for them and will save you quite a lot of money in resort fees.

If they’re close friends, they may be willing to rent you their unit, or better still, loan it to you for a honeymoon getaway. Either way, the cost savings is substantial. You will only need money for your travel expenses, food, drink and entertainment.

Bed and Breakfast

3. B&Bs

Rather than those 5-star luxury resorts, you can opt for a Bed and Breakfast. These are often very well kept and have unique room interiors—as opposed to large, tastefully decorated yet monotone hotel rooms.

This is also a great way to travel through Europe and the continental USA. It will make you feel like you’re one of the locals.

So opt for a romantic, secluded B&B for less than half the price of those flashy resorts and with a B&B, breakfast is included. Many countries also offer travelers pensions, which are a sort of combination between a B&B and a hotel.

4. Cruise deals

Cruise packages are available at affordable rates, especially if you don't mind a smaller room. If you plan on spending more time in your cabin, try to get a balcony or mini-suite, which can still be fairly affordable on some lines.

But this is the time to splurge on whatever accommodations you choose. No matter what type of honeymoon you choose, you will spend an enormous amount of time in your cabin. Make it special—make it unforgettable.

Cruise lines like Carnival, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean are known for their more economical rates. Yet, if you are really on a budget, consider one of these cruise lines for a less expensive honeymoon cruise.Deluxe Suite

This is also a time when the season could help. A cruise to the Caribbean is more affordable in the winter than summer anyway. And who doesn’t sometimes want a reprieve from the winter’s experienced in the Hudson Valley?

5. Register for your honeymoon

For the couple who already have everything they need for their home and who dream instead of romance in a faraway paradise, a honeymoon registry may be perfect for them. This way, the expense can be divided among many guests. Your guests are able to select any of the honeymoon experiences and/or activities you have listed. In most cases, they are even able to leave you a personal message. They pay the value of their gift to you directly by credit or debit card, check, or in person on the day of your wedding.

Your registry information is best passed through family and the bridal party. If guests find out that you need a little help in that area, they will usually be happy to purchase a gift they know you will enjoy. In lieu of a physical wedding gift, they can be a part of the vacation you’ll remember your entire lifetime. A few years ago, it was difficult to find a honeymoon registry, but they are becoming more and more prolific. Search the web for the right one for you or ask your travel agent.

Memories from your honeymoon will remain long after the housewares and other gifts have gone out of style. But please remember, this honeymoon is for both of you. If one of you does all the work, he/she will feel guilty if things don't go perfectly. If you don't participate in the planning, you may end up dissatisfied. Locate a no-cost travel agent and ask your questions (any good agent is paid by the industry and not their clients anyway).

Don’t forget to make time for yourselves. Pad your honeymoon schedule with free time. A rushed and overly organized honeymoon might feel too much like your wedding day. Instead, plan a few enjoyable activities and leave lots of opportunities to just enjoy each other's company. Judicious planning can give you the honeymoon of your dreams.

How to Plan the Perfect Honeymoon: 3 Outrageous Honeymoon Locations

Share

You’ve decided on your something old, something, new, something borrowed and something blue.  Although, there is a place in your heart for tradition, you both are looking to do things differently.  Now, it seems, you also want something slightly outrageous for your special time together after the wedding.

After scouring the four corners of our amazing planet, here are 3 of the top outrageous locations for a honeymoon.

bel-ombre-on-mauritusMauritus. A slice of paradise, this volcanic island off the southeast coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, conjures up images of tropical luxury.  This isle, east of Madagascar, is known for its cobalt-blue seas, white sandy beaches and lavish resorts, there is so much to do here.  Surrounded by one of the largest unbroken coral reefs in the world, you may eventually find yourself wishing for something to do besides sunbathing and swimming.

This island is loaded with historic sights, cultural diversity, geographic variation and almost limitless activities to distract you from the daily grind of beach.  An amazing blend of Indian, African, Chinese and European influences are present on Mauritius.

The climate here is warm and dry in winter (from May to November) and summers, from November to May, are hot, wet and humid.  The largest seaside village on the island, Grand Baie is the place to experience the nightlife—the evening entertainment includes live music and cultural shows.

Several resort’s have access to a private beaches, with views of one of the wide lagoons in Mauritius.  Freshwater swimming pools and fitness centers and spas, and other amenities include tennis courts.  Recreational activities available at these resorts include water-skiing, snorkeling, windsurfing, kayaking, parasailing and diving.

Don’t forget, this island has an incredible coral reef.  There are also several paths offering wilderness walks to bring you closer to nature.   An easy walk will lead you to Alexandra Falls--with its panoramic view of the south and Bel Ombre as well as spectacular view of the Black River Gorges.  Although this island is regarded as being a most romantic destination, Mauritius’ best asset is the relaxed charm of its warm and welcoming people.

Indonesia. Bali, one of the most sought-after spots in the south Pacific, is a tropical island in the Indonesian archipelago.  It is so picturesque it could be a painting.  You two will fall in love all over again here.  There are rice paddies on hillsides that look like giant steps.

The volcanoes rise up through its heavy clouds; it’s a thick tropical jungle with sugary-white sandy beaches, warm azure-colored water, crashing surf and friendly people who don't just have a culture but actually live it.

rice-field-in-baliThis tropical paradise has a unique blend of modern facilities combined with wonderful, rich past and heritage. White-water rafting is a popular activity with trips on the Ayung, Telaga Waja, and Unda Rivers.  Honeymooners can refresh their minds while watching beautiful scenery along the route.  Some of the best surfing beaches in the world can be found on the western side of this island.

Other amusements in Bali include paragliding over the coastline, horseback riding along the shore, jungle trekking, mountain cycling, and bungee jumping.  Island spirits come out to play in the moonlight and every night is a festival.

From June to September the humidity is low, and it can be cool in the evenings. During this time of the year, you'll have hardly any rain in the coastal areas—unlike December through March, which is the Monsoon season.  All of its attractions, its physical beauty, and the consistent agreeable climate make Bali a place regarded by many visitors as the "Ultimate Island."

Dubai.  This city sits in the central area of the Middle East, with mountains and desert to explore.  You will also find a great deal of sunshine and fantastic beaches.  The warm azure waters of the Arabian Gulf gently break on to the white sand all along this coast line.  Guaranteed year-round sunshine and near-perfect conditions for water sports make Dubai an ideal location for beach lovers.  But there are few wave breaks and the strong winds can make swimming difficult.  Also, the water is very salty, so many visitors simply use their hotel swimming pool.  Diving on coral reefs that supports their marine life is available at Khor Fakkan, which is about 90 minutes from town.

dubai-ballonsIf you want to try a Desert Safari or Dune Bashing, you can head out to the desert in an SUV with specialist Desert Drivers.  These drivers will take you for a roller-coaster ride over sand dunes, show you the sunset from a strategic vantage point and then take you to a lavish dinner with music and dance to complete the atmosphere.  You may want to stay clear of the dune-bashing if you know that you get carsick easily.  Or you may enjoy seeing all the sand dunes and mountains instead with an early morning or at sunset during a hot air balloon ride with your new spouse.

You might be surprised to hear about skiing in Dubai, but the skiing area is inside of a mall. There are few malls on earth that match the size of the Mall of Emirates.  This is one mall that truly has everything there.  You two can choose from five different ski runs—each one has a different level of difficulty.  The toughest slope is 400 meters or 1300 feet long.  There is also a 90 meter or 300 foot area just for snowboards.  Regardless of your ski prowess, there is a run for you.

One of the seven emirates making up the UAE (United Arab Emirates), Dubai is a business center.  It was dependent on oil revenues, but now, diversification ensures its growth in other areas, including financial services, real estate, and tourism.  Major new sporting events, such as the Dubai Tennis Championship, and, in golf, the Dubai Desert Classic are also becoming known.  Cooler, more pleasant weather lasts from the end of September to beginning of May (Although note that "pleasant" is relative.  With daily temperatures from October to January and March to May still being 68°F to 77°F, be prepared for cooler nights.)  One of the newest exotic destinations, Dubai is definitely different.

If you're seeking an outrageous destination for your honeymoon, you have a world of choices!  From mountain lodges to beach bungalows, you're sure to find the perfect way to celebrate your wedded bliss.  You and your fiancé may chose to spend your entire honeymoon in one incredible spot or you may opt to travel through many locales.  If you are after a destination which provides you the ultimate in excitment and enjoyment you could do far worse than considering one of these outrageous honeymoon destinations.

Does Your Freezer Space Take the Wedding Cake?

Share

Do we really need that cake taking up freezer space for a year?

At Corsino Cakes I ask this question in every wedding consult.  And the answer really depends on the couple and their situation over the next year. purple-wedding-cake

For most this will be a year of change.   A couple who is planning to move, does not want to worry about moving a cake, it getting more freezer burn due to thawing and refreezing, and the overall hassle.  Some couples love the tradition and nostalgia of having that cake a year later.

It really comes down to choice, but here are some additional options to remembering your wedding day with cake a year later.

The Big Freeze

Simply freeze the small top layer or a big slice to share a year later.  Certainly there is nothing wrong with this option. But some care instructions do help.

First, if any cake is exposed, place a piece of plastic wrap on it directly, then put it in a pastry box that was hopefully supplied when you left your wedding, wrap it twice in opposite directions with plastic wrap, and place it in the deepest part of your freezer.  If you have a separate freezer this is even better.  What we are trying to prevent here is freezer burn, so the further from the freezer door the better.  Don’t take it out to look at it. I suggest a picture - you will see it again in a year!

cake-sliceThe next part, defrosting.  I would not suggest just pulling it out and leaving it on the counter.  What you want to do is slowly bring it back to room temperature.  This prevents additional drying and if any ice has built off, it won’t disintegrate your cake quite as bad.  To do this, take it from the freezer and place in the refrigerator the day before your first anniversary, so it is nice and defrosted the day of.  At this point, let it come to room temperature for a half hour or so, and enjoy.  This will provide the best results one year later.

Ordering a Replica wine-bottle-cake

So, you don’t want the hassle of freezing and it taking up space, but you want it one year later?  Simple, ask your baker to place an order for the same exact flavor one year later!  I have done this with many of my clients and they are very satisfied to have the same freshness on their first anniversary.

Some bakeries may not want to have a small order lingering for a year. If so, just let them know a few months out and they should be able to accommodate.  A good business should be able to pull up what flavors you had, and even a photo of your actual cake, so it can be replicated well.

Enjoy the Memories

The third option is simple, if you don’t want it, don’t have it!  But, you may always go back to your baker in a year and have a new cake if you change your mind.

Just remember, if you want to save the actual wedding cake, let your baker know AND let your caterer/venue know as well.  It may get sliced up in the confusion and a whole top layer keeps better than a big slice.  Just follow these easy steps, and your wedding cake will be properly prepared to survive the one-year hibernation in the icy cold tundra of your kitchen!
