Trina & John's Fabulous Ivory & Teal Wedding At the Villa Borghese...Coming July 2010! Trina and John's autumn engagment photos - Majestic Studios

The Search - We got engaged this past August in Cape May, NJ. I am an organized gal and I knew that when I went back to school in September (I am a high school counselor) things would be way too crazy once school started to devote the time I would like to spend on the wedding planning. Plus, I have heard how quickly vendors book up, so started hunting for our wedding venue as soon as we got back from our engagement vacation!

John and I booked up our weekends and even some week nights looking at wedding venues. We live in Danbury, my family lives in Dutchess County, and John's family lives in Northern Westchester County, so we decided on doing a 3 area loop of wedding venues in our price range (roughly $100 per person) that also had a guest capacity of 150-175 (we couldn't believe how fast the guest list added up!)

Some of the places we visited were absolutely "no way," and some we kept on our list. We visited about 10 wedding venues in roughly 3-4 weekends. (I know crazy right!) We were tired, but we also had fun! Some places gave us bottles of champagne and tickets to comedy shows just to entice us to book.

The Criteria - When looking at these venues, we eliminated them based a variety of factors...

• Not handicap accessible. (Something to think about if you have elderly guests or guests who have a hard time with stairs.)
• Hotels were 30 minutes or more away.
• Additional charges for ceremony chairs, wine table service, etc.
• Not a lot of food offered for the price. (One cocktail hour included only a vegetable and cheese display and 8-10 butlered hors d'ouevres.)

The Location - Villa Borghese

We ended up choosing the Villa Borghese in Wappingers Falls, NY for the date, Friday July 9th 2010.

Karen is wonderful! She was very thorough with explaining the wedding packages and showing us around the venue. We even tasted the most delicious champagne we have EVER tasted that is served at the wedding! I don't really like champagne, but this was very tasty!

The Villa Borghese included everything we were looking for and more at an affordable price. Also, because of the amount of guests were expect, we receive 5 complimentary hotel rooms at the Marriott Courtyard in Fishkill. This was all around the best venue we could have chosen. We are really happy with our choice and can't wait for the wedding!

The Entertainment - The DJ Solution

John and I are confident that we booked the best wedding DJs EVER! Stephanie and Jeff Padovani are great! We are really excited to have them DJ at our wedding.

Jeff will also be playing the acoustic guitar during our ceremony and cocktail hour. We are in the process of looking for some very unique music to be played at our ceremony.

The Officiant - Father Rich Hasselbach

Father Rich Hasselbach is great! He is an ordained Catholic Priest and we couldn't ask for a better officiant. We are having an outdoor ceremony at the Villa Borghese. When we told him we were booked with the DJ Solution, he was so excited!!!!

Videography - Artistic Images

I can't tell you how many video clips I watched online. If a video brought tears to my eyes, I contacted the vendor!

We booked with Artistic Images, a superb husband/wife team (Kathy and Jim Culhane) who create amazing storytelling videos! We wanted a video to capture ourselves and our friends and family in the moment. We will never be able to recreate these special people "in action" again. A video to us compliments the photography. Trina and John's engagement photo session - Majestic Studios

Photography - Majestic Studios *The engagement photos in this blog post are courtesy of Mark Greenstone from Majestic Studios.

John and I were extremely picky about who we chose as our photographer. It is the most important (and expensive) piece we think, so we wanted to choose a photographer who offered quality photography and a great package at a reasonable price.

I looked at a bunch of websites and we met with a few photographers. Being able to see the pictures and the photographer's style was important. We do like the photojouralistic shots, but also wanted traditional photos.

We chose Majestic Studios in Hopewell Junction. Mark Greenstone is fantastic! He is very organized, professional, friendly, and worked with us on a package of exactly what we wanted. The price is also reasonable for what we chose, as I did a lot of research on this. Mark recently took our engagements photos and they came out beautiful!

He is also great at getting back to me when I have questions. We are really happy with our choice in photography!

The Dress - The Town Shop

The Town Shop in Poughkeepsie is the best bridal shop around (in my opinion)! If you want friendly, personalized service, where when you walk in you are greeted warmly, the Town Shop is for you! Giovanna works with me and she is so fabulous! I absolutely love her!

My dress is designed by Maggie Sottero and it is absolutely gorgeous! The price of the dress includes 3 dress fittings!
One piece of advice is to definitely give yourself enough time to select and order a dress, because my dress is made to my measurements and takes 6-8 months to arrive. My mom was with me when I tried on the dress and she says I look like "Hollywood." It's like a vintage "old hollywood" style dress in ivory with lace and Swarovski crystals. I can't wait to see John's expression when he sees me on our wedding day!

Bridesmaid Dresses - The Town Shop

I did go look at those "bridal warehouses" and I did not like anything I saw. The dresses were cheaply made, the zippers were all broken, and one dress was the same material as my bedroom curtains! Plus, I did not feel the same personalized attention that I received at the Town Shop.

I went to the Town Shop and I picked out a really pretty, elegant dress in teal, by Mori Lee. With the discount they gave (because I ordered my dress here) it was so reasonable...cheaper in price than the warehouse dresses! The girls are really happy with the dress too, which is important to me.

Wedding Invitations - Rexcraft

They say that the wedding invitation, "sets the stage for the wedding." While the invitation is important, at the end of the day, most people are going to toss it in the garbage after the wedding is over. So we want to chose invitations that are beautiful, but not crazy expensive.

I don't have the time (or patience) for DIY invitations, so I ordered every wedding invitation catalog I could get my hands on! When I received the catalog I would go online to their website and order samples. The invitations in person do not always look as nice and elegant in the pictures! Most of the samples are free.

We are going with a Rexcraft invitation in the Simple but Elegant collection (Embellished: W6047.) We haven't ordered them yet though!

Wedding Favors - Disc Duplication

We both love music and we are going to give a wedding music CD as a favor. We can include music from the wedding and pictures of us! Rich Rossi from Disc Duplication is great!

Transportation - Country Grove Limousine

We were looking for two limos for the bridal party and a shuttle to transport guests from the hotel to the Villa Borghese and back. Tom from Country Grove Limousine is very personable and offers reasonable packages! He was able to accommodate everything we need for our special day.

Save the Date Magnets - Totally Wedding Magnets

I would highly recommend Save the Date magnets. I found this great website and ordering with them was sooooo easy! They have a large amount of Save the Date magnets (and colors) to choose from at a reasonable price. Before it goes to production, they e-mail you a free proof of your magnet. We sent out our Save the Date magnets recently and we keep getting tons of compliments on them!

The Colors - Ivory and Teal

I envisioned the girls dresses in blue/teal. I saw a picture of this great teal color in a magazine. But when I saw it in person, I didn't like it because it was too bright and too "prom/sweet 16."

I wanted the girls' dresses and color to compliment the style of my dress. So I guess you could say that my dress was my inspiration! Did I mention how much I love my dress? LOL. The Mori Lee teal is so rich and elegant.

New Traditions - Irish Claddagh Wedding Cup

We also want to include sentimental touches in our wedding and perhaps create new traditions in the process. We are looking at incorporating very special music selections in the ceremony and an Irish claddagh wedding cup instead of the unity candle.

Wedding Finds - My Wedding & Traveler's Joy

My Wedding - Free Wedding Website

A major wedding find was our FREE wedding website! I am an internet guru and found this amazing site. You can upload music, photos, link to your registries and so much more for free! Plus, your website will stay up for however long you want. Other wedding websites charge for the service. If you can create a great wedding website at no cost, why incur an additional expense? We have received so many compliments on our site!

Traveler's Joy - Honeymoon Registry

This is a fabulous wedding honeymoon registry site. Since John and I live together and have combined our households, we do not need to register for the traditional items like some couples. So we decided on creating a honeymoon registry.

We booked a Mediterranean cruise (we have never been to Europe) and we thought the honeymoon registry was a great alternative! Feel free to check out our registry to get an idea of what a honeymoon registry is all about!

Margaret and Nick's wedding ceremony at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel with reception following at the Grandview in Poughkeepsie, NY was an Margaret and Nick's wedding day on Water St in Poughkeepsie - Photo by Lori O'Tooleunforgettable celebration blending the couples love for food and family with personal details and inspirational Hudson Valley wedding style.

Margaret is the Banquet Manager of The Grandview and Nick is the executive chef at the Shadows restaurant next door, so choosing it as the location of their wedding reception was a cinch. It was also the ideal way to introduce their Long Island families to their work "family" here in Poughkeepsie, while treating them to the top-notch Grandview service.

The Date - 9.7.09

Margaret and Nick chose Labor Day Monday for their wedding to take advantage of greater availability and flexible pricing on a holiday Monday. Since most of their guests were bussed in from out of town, this was a convenient choice for them, too.

This beautiful Catholic church was recently restored. Father James Garisto was wonderful to work with and more than willing to accommodate the weddings of non-parishoners. Highly recommended!

The Venue - The Grandview

Margaret knew from experience the excellent service at the Grandview; after all, she's been a part of that winning team for hundreds of weddings herself! As she tells it, everything she had learned from the wedding vendor side made her appreciate their stellar service that much more.

They accommodated Margaret and Nick's special requests; the couple actually made the raviolis that were served to their guests, included a wine and cheese bar, and had a outdoor grill for shish kabobs.

The Grandview offers a signature cocktail, so the couple choose a Freeport Sunrise in honor of their first date in Freeport when they talked all night until the sun rose.

Her guests experienced the royal treatment. The food was great and there was TONS of it! "They asked me, ‘What do you want it to be?' and then they made it that way." Margaret smiled. "Because I knew how hard they worked to do it, make it that much better."

Margaret had her mind set on Lori O'Toole as her wedding photographer before she was even engaged! Since Nick is a little camera shy, their engagement shoot with Lori was a comfortable warm up for the big day. Lori helped them plan a fun and unique wedding day portrait session for just the two of them on Water Street outside the piano factory.

Margaret highly recommends an engagement photo session with your photographer; you'll get to know each other and develop chemistry and comfort that will make your wedding day photos even more spectacular.

The Video - Best of Times Videography

The couple wanted a video of their wedding day, but Margaret was still surprised how important it was to her to hear her guests voices and see those moving pictures after the day was done. When her father became ill shortly after the wedding, those video memories became even more precious.

The newlyweds were surprised to find eight hours of raw footage from the wedding ready for viewing when they returned from their honeymoon. Afterwards Nick asked, "Were they really there?" That's how unobtrusive they were capturing those moments, many of which they missed on their wedding day.

The Flowers - David Anthony

The Theme - Black and White Damask with Red Accents space-highland

Margaret simply LOVES red. She bought red shoes to wear under her wedding dress (Nick's request) and found red charger plates to really tie her colors together. She even wore a red feather boa leftover from her bachelorette party for her grand entrance!

Margaret's trademark style always includes either a flower in her hair, polka dots or bows. On her wedding day, she found a way to work in all three! She wore a white gardenia in her hair (a clay accent found on Etsy), her red shoes had tiny bows on them, and the second layer of lace on her dress had Swiss polka dots.

The Cloth Connection provided the stunning linens in black and white damask for the tables and stations. If you want to work colors into your linens and plates for the wedding, Margaret suggests that you ask your caterer for help and advice. They may have connections or options available that can save you money and add style to your day.

Getting Ready Venue - Space in Highland, NY

Margaret, her bridesmaids and family got ready at Vivian Photography's Space in Highland. It's a choice she would recommend for any bride.

"Space is a serene and lovely spot to get ready for the biggest day of your life," Margaret told me. "My photos are gorgeous. And the best part of Space is Vivian. She is a godsend!" Vivian catered their breakfast and helped the morning go smoothly...especially in the midst of their hair and makeup drama.

Invitations & Programs - Wedding Paper Divas The bride's red shoes under her dress - Photo by Lori O'Toole

Margaret wanted a stress-free, reasonably priced alternative for her invitations, and the Wedding Paper Divas was it. The service and price were great; they even caught a typo and brought it to her attention before printing.

Personal Details

Margaret and Nick had six of their favorite engagement photos blown up to a 34x36 size to create their own mini art show for their cocktail hour. The prints cost only cost $10 from PosterBrain.com and another $10 for frames from Target.

Margaret and her father surprised their guests by doing a Father Daughter dance to Shirley Temple's "Baby, Take a Bow." It had always been "their song," so they tap danced together to the delight of their guests.

Favorite Splurge - Saratoga Photo Booth

The photo booth was a bigger hit with guests than Margaret ever could have imagined. The photos were hysterical and the kids loved it; her creative seven year old nieces took a series of shots toasting (with empty glasses) then feigning surprise, fear and anger.

What would she do differently?

  • Choose a different hair and makeup artist. (See Margaret's drama post for details.) Lesson learned: trust your gut if something doesn't feel right.
  • Allow for more time in her wedding day schedule.

As you can see from these amazing photos, Margaret and Nick's day showcased their fun-loving personalities and signature style. Well done! (And thanks for sharing your story!)

Amanda and Marc at their wedding ceremony - Photo by Aaron Almendral

When Marc and I decided to get married we had made a $10,000 budget for ourselves and decided that we were going to use all of our available resources to make our wedding as personal as we could. We looked at a total of hmmmm, 3 venues?

Entrance to Audrey's Farmhouse - Photo by Aaron AlmendralMy mother then mentioned that a year back she had met a man who had hit a deer in front of her house and needed assistance and in conversation with him learned that he and his wife were in the hospitality business and owned a bed and breakfast nearby. It was important for us to get married local to where we met and were both from so we made an appointment to check this place out as per my Mother's suggestion and the rest is history. The place is called Audrey's Farmhouse and it is literally a sweet farmhouse that has been in existence since the 1700's- you can check it out here : www.audreysfarmhouse.com. Upon our meeting with the manager we were informed that they had friends who owned a vacation rental across the street that our own of town guests could stay in. Perfect.

When I had thought about a tent wedding initially it didn't phase us about all the details that had to be considered- an a-la-carte wedding. This allowed us to decide on caterer, music and décor. We could be as elaborate or as simple as we wanted. We were lucky to have selected the best of vendors, The DJ Solution and Bridge Creek Catering. Honestly, they walked us through every step and in conversation we learned about all the components that make a wedding.

The most elaborate décor we had were hanging paper lanterns in the tent, which were beautiful. The color scheme was autumnal and the creators of the lighting, Magic Lanterns, needed no direction from us- they just went with it and they were beautiful. My favorite detail.

A family friend did our floral arrangements which were lime green garden rose bouquets for the bridesmaids and gorgeous fall bounty themed for my bouquet and the tables.

Music is very important to Marc and I so we asked our guests to write their 3 favorite songs on the RSVP to the invitations and we would compile a must play list to make sure to incorporate all guests. Stephanie and Jeff worked with us every step of the way as they noted how important this was to us. Stephanie also offered to help coordinate the wedding party line-up for the ceremony as we didn't hire a coordinator and this was another detail we didn't realize took some organization! We chose songs for the ceremony that reflected our time spent together and felt were appropriate. The rest was dictated by some of our favorites from the guests input. It worked very well, we Vintage owl lovebirds perched on top of wedding cake - Photos by Aaron Almendralwent two hours overtime on the dance floor.

Our friend Mike is an artist and he made our table numbers and also designed a stamp for us to use on our place cards to inform guests where to sit. Our favors were owl pins taken from an image that we used on our save the date. If were to choose a theme for the wedding it would be "Vintage Fall Owl Wedding" for lack of better phrasing. The theme was an afterthought- we chose what we liked and it all came together.Vintage owl buttons as wedding favors - Photo by Aaron Almendral

Thinking about it now there weren't too many snags. We were lucky to have a beautiful day- we were banking on it. All of our vendors worked so nicely together that the coordination of the day went smoothly. I'm not sure much would be different if we were to do it all over again! We were very lucky.

The only time I was concerned is when we set the date on Rosh Hoshana only to learn that most of Marc's family would be in temple, but we sent our invites and those who could make it, did. We wanted the date, September 19th because it actually fell on the day before my 30th birthday.

Any advice I would give to anyone planning a wedding is to ask questions, many questions and utilize all of your creativity to cut cost. People feel very connected to the wedding when it comes from the heart. We did end up going over budget but decided to work that out once things settled down again, which is what we are doing now.

Most of all, be true to what you want, don't let the racket of other people's opinions influence your decisions as when the day those things do not matter anymore. Amanda and Marc sharing their first dance as husband and wife to More Than This - Photo by Aaron Almendral
