Wedding in a Winter Wonderland

Share

With the first day of winter fast approaching, I wanted to give a shout out to the winter wedding. It’s not the most popular time of year to get married, so it presents lots of great opportunities.

Many venues and vendors have off-season discounts. Plus, they are often less busy so you might get more personalized service and faster turn-around on products, not to mention first pick among them. Here are some other reasons why winter weddings rock!

elements

Winter offers a built-in theme. You can decorate with seasonal elements or be inspired by traditional colors. Eileen and Mike took the opportunity to host their nuptials on New Year’s Eve last year, making their wedding and 2011 truly the year to remember!

accessories

There are some great accessory options that are even better in winter, too: rhinestone accents add a special sparkle, and fun boots look hip beneath a wedding dress. Most importantly, though, invest in a cute coat! It’s so great to do at least a few photos outside and being comfortable (and practically dressed for the weather) will make all the difference in communicating your style.

Tip: When planning your winter wedding, remember that photography and video require more light than the naked eye. In winter, the sun sets early - sometimes with all usable light gone by 4:30pm! So start your photography early, do your formals early, or make sure your photographer can do something great in the dark!

Sunday Style: Sexy Back

Share

Let’s talk body parts for a second. Most wedding gowns seem to be designed to deliver your girls on a silver platter. That’s nice and all for those of us who have more than enough to go around, but it sucks for ladies who don’t have much going on in the chest department.

Instead of trying to “fix” what your momma gave you (there’s only so much wonder a bra can deliver!), consider the other side of sexy: showing off your back. In fact, I think showing a little skin in back is even sexier than something low cut up front.

Small details like bows, buttons and unexpected straps draw attention while deep v-cuts add a dramatic sexiness to the look.

While some of these dresses also aim to show off a little cleavage, you should be careful of how much skin you show—unless, of course, you’re willing to be mistaken for a hooker or a contestant on Dancing With the Stars.

If you’re not comfortable dipping as low as some of the gowns above do, another gorgeous and equally sexy option is giving a little peekaboo. Here’s an example from Watters:

To create a similar look with more coverage, you can pair a strapless gown with a keyhole bolero. The extra bit of fabric is great for more modest girls or ladies who want to show off a generous chunk of cleavage. Either way, the reveal of a specific area of flesh in back is undeniably sexy.

5 Big Day Must-Haves

Share

There are millions of things you could have with you on your wedding day, but chances are you’ll never end up reaching for most of them. So instead of lugging around all of your wedding supplies in lots of little gift bags that you’ve collected along your wedding planning way, grab a cute tote and throw in the items below! Have one of your bridesmaids carry it around for you so you can everything you need within an arm’s reach!

Survival Kit

Wedding Weekend ToteAnd by survival I mean “comfort”. All the items in here probably won’t save the day if something goes awry, but should you get a blister, a headache, or your lipstick rub off a bit, you’ll be able to get it taken care of right away!

Get a small makeup bag (or a Ziploc bag works just as well) and throw in band-aids, Tylenol and ibuprofen, a mini hairspray and bobby pins, twisty ties, nail color and top coat, breath mints (no gum!), Kleenex, and a couple of bucks.

Camera

Whether it’s your trusty digital camera, a cheap-o one from Target or just your cell phone, make sure you have a camera on you!

Yes, you have a photographer for all of the professional picture taking, but there are just some moments he (or she) won’t be around to capture. That’s where your personal camera comes in–snap a photo of your girls getting ready, of you and your love right after you’ve walked back up the aisle and are having a quiet, special moment (HELLO! You’re officially married!!), and the last thing you see before you leave for the evening.

Snacks and Water

A girl must eat on her wedding day! And so should all the other members of her wedding party. Have some snacks, like crackers, bananas and apples and fruit snacks on hand along with some water (skip the soda pop or other colorful drinks–if they spill, they might stain!).

Make sure you have a bite before you walk down the aisle–there will be no fainting at your wedding!

Contacts List

Make sure you have a list with all of the names and cell phone numbers of your vendors, wedding party and any other VIPs of your wedding day. If someone is late or a no-show, have one of your bridesmaids give him or her a call to see what’s up. Better yet, have that same bridesmaid (or your wedding planner) be the one to check up on everything and make any necessary calls so you can focus on the most important person of the day–your soon-to-be hubby!

One Go-to Person

Designate a single person to be the one to carry around all of the items above and to troubleshoot any issues that come up. You should spend your day enjoying what you’ve put together and the first day of the rest of your life with your best friend, not worrying about the florist showing up 15 minutes late or a chipped nail.

Gather and organize all the things above, hand 'em over, and enjoy your day!
