2009 Wedding Trends Continue With...Custom Cake Toppers!
As weddings get more and more personal...a trend I absolutely LOVE...this year our Hudson Valley couples are embracing the custom wedding cake topper en force.
Literally hundreds of custom cake topper options are available from sellers on Etsy. Prices start at $20 and come in quirky, crazy, funny or traditional styles. Choices range from edible photo cake toppers (yes, you can actually eat them...provided you don't have a Red Dye #5 phobia) to hand painted wooden figures customized with hair and clothes to clay sculptures and beyond.
One of our Locust Grove couples this year had cake toppers made with photos of their faces and came complete with their dogs at their feet.
Most of these cake toppers are customized with a photo of the couple and can be as simple as as elaborate as you like.
This would be my first choice for a cake topper if I were getting married again, in honor of my husband's guitar god status. (Look, Jeff! It's even got a cat on the amplifier, just like in real life.)

One of our bravest, zaniest couples from last year had a custom bobble head cake topper. No kidding!
Cool cats Scott and Cat even had bobble heads made for their entire bridal party as gifts. Check out this photo of their bobble head bonanza courtesy of Mark Greenstone from Majestic Studios.
Ah, this custom cake topper below reveals an awful lot about the couple, don't you think?
Drinking a Seven-Eleven slushie and either playing brutal game of baseball (check out the bloody ball) or having a wicked good time with a rolling pin.
One of our more romantic couples created their own customized cake topper with a four-sided glass photo holder. Inside they placed photos of themselves as little kids and two photos of them as a couple.
In each case, customized cake toppers are show-stoppers. Your guests will ooh and ahh over them for sure, whipping cameras out to capture it all. It can be an "affordable" extravagance for recession weddings.
What do you think of this cake topper trend?
